Foods that help with acne

Who doesn’t want a clear skin? Billions of bucks are spent every year on over-the-counter anti-acne products. However, those expensive products won’t work on any breakouts if the problem is inside your body.

Our skin talks to us about what is going inside our body and if we don’t be careful about what we take in our bodies, skin will give us a red signal in the form of disorders like acne.

So, how to make sure that the communication by our skin is smooth?

Studies have revealed that high-protein, low-glycemic foods play a major role in improving acne. So, it’s a good idea to start a wholesome base, such as a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables.

Today, Earth’s Wisdom would like to introduce a few best foods that can make your skin acne-free.

1. Lemon

Fresh lemon juice acts as a natural astringent and therefore it can blur blemishes and tighten sagging skin.

However, it’s not recommended to use it topically because it’s too acidic and can destroy your skin barrier, making it darken or lighten too much when exposed to sunlight.

However, when properties of lemon reach you in the form of a serum, over a salad, squeezed in your water or as a part of your diet, it can create magic, provided you include the peel. The anti-cancer effects of citrus peel flavonoids have been confirmed by a 2014 study.

2. Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are loaded with retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, ideal for fighting acne and keeping wrinkles away. Although you can get hundreds of retinol creams and lotions in the market, they can be too harsh on the skin of people under 30. So, eating it instead in its natural form i.e. through sweet potatoes is a better idea.

Sweet potatoes also have beta-carotene which changes to vitamin A. Sweet potatoes have their beautiful coloration due to beta-carotene.

When you eat sweet potatoes, beta-carotene in them will get converted to vitamin A in your body. This vitamin acts as a barrier against inflammation, clogged pores and discoloration typically given by free radicals.

3. Kale

Kale scores over all other members of the cabbage family by being the most nutrient-rich.

This low-calorie food is loaded with:

  • Vitamins A, B-6, C and K
  • Calcium
  • Potassium
  • Manganese
  • Copper
  • Magnesium

The vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in kale reduce hyperpigmentation and thus even out your skin tone. Vitamin C stimulates collagen production as well, helping repair acne scars quicker by enhancing cell turnover rate.

4. Legumes

Do you know what is common in peanuts, kidney beans, chickpeas and lentils? These legumes have a low GI and so, they are related to more consistent blood sugar levels and fewer acne outbreaks.

High glycemic foods such as breakfast cereals, chocolate, white rice and bagels may cause your blood sugar to rise instantly. According to research, this not only causes type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart attack, but it may also toll on your skin.

5. Berries

Though all the berries like cherries, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries, are small in size, they are bursting with antioxidants and vitamin C. Vitamin C when circulates in your body acts as a powerful tool against blotchy skin while antioxidants in berries act like a joint attack against the irritating dark spots, preventing them from arising in the first place.

6. Pumpkin

Packed with fruit enzymes, alpha hydroxyl acids and zinc, pumpkin can restore pH balance and soften skin. Therefore it’s used in several exfoliating products and masks.

Plus, all that zinc and fiber will do you good internally as well. Zinc helps to regulate the production of skin oil.

Along with the above super-foods, also consider including foods like papaya, quinoa, cauliflower and salmon in your diet and enjoy freedom from acne.
